Opening for California Guitar TrioFeb. 29th I had the great opportunity to open a concert for The California Guitar Trio at Crossroads Station in donwtown Kansas City. This was a chance to not open a show for a national touring act but also to play one of the best concert venues in the Crossroads district which is really booming in KC.
My 35 minute set went off pretty well. While the audience was a little noisey they seemed to enjoy my music. I also got to hang backstage with the CGT which was cool. Fifty bucks for a 35 minute set, not bad pay! Kevin Friday, February 1st, 2008 12:31 PM CST
Opening for California Guitar TrioFeb. 29th at the Crosstown Station in downtown Kansas City , Missouri I will open a show for the California Guitar Trio.
This is a big opportunity for me as alot of people interested in progressive acoustic guitar playing will be there. Since being in Kansas City this past year I have been trying to land an opening slot on a real show like this. Now its finally happened! Hope to see some people who have been at some of my other gigs around town at this show. Thanks, Kevin Hiatt Monday, January 7th, 2008 6:36 PM CST
Inspiration Grant and other StuffAs the year 2007 ended I was way very happy to have received news that the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City awarded me a $1000 Inspiration Grant. This will allow me to record a few chamber music works with some Kansas City musicians among Tom Aber of BCR/New Ear, guitarist Beau Bledsoe, and pianist Michael Dolman, an old friend from my Conservatory days of the 1970's.
Amost finished copying my new orchestral score 'A Tyger Ascending the Mountain', now come the parts , sigh........ Just today I may have made a connection with a downtown club for opening some good shows for major acts such as the Californai Guitar Trio. Stay Tuned!!! First year back in Kansas CityThis past October has marked my first year back in my hometown of Kansas city. Suffice to say it has been a series of hills and valleys. Since January I ahve played over 60 gigs here in KC and managed to exist on playing and guitar lessons alone. Still no day job for me, I'm not sure that is a good ro bad thing.
Presently I am copying a 9 minute orchestra piece which will be premiered sometime in the spring by the KU Medical Arts Orchestra. Also trying to do some grant writing to secure some money with which I could record a third cd. While I have not given up the idea of evenually relocating out to San Francisco I am having a fairly fun time of it here in KC. There are many creative artists and venues to keep me occupied. If anyone reads this just please send some money! Any way Happy Thanksgiving to all who come to my site. best Kevin Hiatt Tuesday, September 4th, 2007 3:10 PM CDT
Teaching at Communiversity again!Once of the many deja vu experiences I get to live out here since returing to Kc in Oct or last year is teaching at Communiverstiy again. This Sept 22nd I will teacha seminar on Fingerstyle guitar
from 1-4 pm. The lst time I taught a communiverstiy course was back in the summer of 1976. I will also play a set at the communiverstiy registration night at the Writers Place on Tuesday Sept 11 from 6-8. Other projects include a new orchestra piece and recording a new guitar demo for fine dining gigs. One tune will be my arrangement of Nature Boy by Nat King Cole, (my Mom would approve of this! lol) best Kevin Saturday, August 4th, 2007 4:46 PM CDT
Kemper Concert and the Fringe FestivalThis past weekend from July 26 thru July 29th was a whirlwind of playing for me. I played three concerts on the Fringe Festival in downtown Kansas City in what I still call the River Quay area. Going back to play at 412 Deleware street took me back to the scene of some of my first paying gigs as a 16 year old circa 1973 at a place DinkleDorf's. On Friday i performed with my partner Patrick Conway at the Kemper Museum on the SummerSound's concert series.
This event was also a deja vu experience for me as the Kemper Museum sits on the same grounds that the old UMKC Conservatory of Music stood years ago. I attended the Conservatory back in the mid to late 70's so playing there in the atrium of the Kemper Museum was a real return to the scene of my early musical stomping grounds. Patrick Conway is an excellent percussionist and always makes me play better with him then when I am alone. Hopefully I'll be back to that venue before to long. Other summer projects include string quartets, an orchestra piece and writing poetry and a shoprt story or two. Bucks are short but life is pretty interesting compared to a year ago when I was still in Fort Wayne. Drop me a line on the guestbook page. thanks Kevin Saturday, June 23rd, 2007 10:27 PM CDT
New Orchestral work for April 08 PremiereI am in the planning process for writing a new 8 minute orchestral work to be played by the Univ. of Kansas Medical Arts Symphony.
A former professor of mine from the UMKC Conservatory- Dr. Merton Shatzkin is the conductor. While the orchestra is semi-professional in status many of the principal players are professional in quality so I am looking forward to writing a new work that will take advantage of their talents. Dr. Shatzkin and I will confer over the exact instrumentation in the next few days and then I will start to compose over the summer. Other news includes starting a band for the first time since I was 16! I am performing with Kurt Morrow a very fine bass player and percussionist Pat Conway with who I have been gigging since earlier this year. The reportoire is a combination of my tunes and classic acoustic pop and rock. Friday, May 18th, 2007 5:56 PM CDT
Concert at Kemper Museum on July 27thI'll be playing a concert of all original music at the Kemper Museum of Modern Art on July 27th at 6:30 pm. Percussionist Patrick Conway will
perform with me as well. Its sort of deja vu to play at this site as it stands on the grounds of the old Conservatory of Music where I did my undergrad work back in the 70's. Other news includes finishing a new piano piece called 'Sat TIrath', its about about six minutes long and astonishingly tonal, especially for me. Had a great gig at Bar Natasha last week and have plans to produce new music concerts there this fall. Monday, March 26th, 2007 3:01 PM CDT
Spring in Kansas CityHappy Spring to all who come here>
news for me includes recently taking refuge as a Buddhist this past weekend (March 4th) at the KC Rime Center. This Saturday I play my first show at The Hurricane a rock bar in KC. New compositions include a work for oboe and multi percussion called "Prayer Call for Simurgh". Also laying plans to begin tracking on a new cd at Soundtrek Studios over the upcoming spring/summer months. In general life is good. Happy Spring you all! New Year in Kansas CityGreetings and Happy New Year to all who visit my site!
As 2007 gets off to a start I find myself once again in my hometown of Kansas City and beginning a new chapter of my life. Since arriving here in October I have played several gigs in my old stomping grounds of Westport, played on the air at KKFI, and made many reconnections with friends from the 70's and early 80's when I was a student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. I am busy copying the score to a new work for oboe and multi-percussion entitled 'Prayer Calls for Simurgh' which will likely be performed this spring. In short the move back to Kansas Cty from Fort Wayne has eniched my life and given me a new sense of enthusiasm for living. best wishes to all for 2007! Kevin Hiatt |
